Degrees: Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Programs

Pharmaceutical scientists apply sophisticated scientific principles to a broad range of problems in health and biology. They may be entrepreneurs, or they may be employed by industry, universities, or governmental and private organizations where they work in research, product development, analysis and quality control, management, and teaching. In each of these careers, scientific creativity and problem-solving ability are paramount and well rewarded.

Because the University of Michigan is one of the world's foremost research-intensive universities, graduate degrees in Medicinal Chemistry (including Pharmaceutical/Computational Chemistry), Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Social and Administrative Sciences from U-M carry instant recognition and respect worldwide. As a result, our graduates are prime recruitment candidates for prestigious and well-paying careers in a wide variety of disciplines.

Graduate programs at the U-M College of Pharmacy are highly regarded for their interdisciplinary emphasis and are directed by faculty with international reputations for excellence in research and teaching.

Following admission to U-M, graduate students spend roughly two years taking advanced-level courses relevant to their specific Ph.D. program. Typically, these courses are bound together with research projects during the second year. The remaining two to three years of Ph.D. study are devoted to conducting research and writing and defending a thesis. Progress toward thesis research is monitored by frequent one-to-one faculty advisor and research group meetings and regular meetings with a student’s thesis committee. During the full-time research phase, Ph.D. students are required to make presentations at a department seminar or professional meeting.
